Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Allotey Jacobs, has condemned Former President Mahama for promising to free arrested illegal miners should he return to power again.
He says the former president and members of his party have desperately resorted to playing dirty politics, promising all manner of things just to convince people to vote them back to power.
He says he is praying that the party he once served remains in opposition for a long time.
“A video on social media showed the former president saying that he will release all galamsayers should he come to power. Other NDC members Tony Aubyn and Kwaky Boahene have also made that statement
“This certainly tells you that we are playing dirty politics in this country just for the sake of power. Members of the opposition party are now saying that they will make sure that illegal miners are back in their field, forgetting that this menace has destroyed all our water bodies”, he said
After this, the same people who will ask why the Ghana Water Company is increasing tariffs, knowing very well that the cost of heating water has increase due to the menace of galamsay”, he added
In the run-up to the 2020 presidential election, Mr Mahama, promised to grant amnesty to persons who have been arrested for engaging in illegal mining in the country.
“It’s sad. The government said it was fighting galamsay and they arrested, prosecuted and jailed Ghanaians who were engaged in that activity but left the Chinese woman. When we come to power, we shall grant all those arrested and jailed some amnesty’, he said on Peace FM
