The seriousness each team attached to the G6 pre-season tournament has been laid bear at the start of the new betpawa Ghana premier league season.
The teams who took the pre-season tournament seriously reaped the benefits after at least 70 percent of the clubs (Olympics, Chelsea, Medeama) all won their opening games.
As for Hearts of Oak, widely regarded as one of the biggest clubs in Ghana, the reverse was the case. The club decided to not take the G6 tournament seriously; which resulted in their first loss in a game with many of their fans expecting at least a draw.
The first team was engaged in friendly matches with lower-tier clubs when a very huge opportunity was presented to play against more competitive clubs.Â
So I asked myself, who came up with the decision to field Hearts of Oak’s junior side in a very important pre-season competition?
The team at certain points looked disjointed in the game against Aduana. The new players could not gel as expected. The coach looked very frustrated at points. And the decision taken to withdraw the first team from the G6 tourney looks to have backfired.
A lot of fans criticized the club’s decision concerning the G6 tournament which the club turned a deaf ear. Maybe the club needs to eat humble pie, and admit that they goofed.Â
Moving forward, the club needs prior preparation for their game against Olympics because the “land landlords they affectionately love to be known, look more prepared than Hearts of Oak, and another loss to the Phobians in that crucial derby could have dire effects on the club sooner than later.
