Blocking of SIM Cards: Ghanaians do not have the sense of urgency – Kamal-Deen Abdulai

While a class or group of Ghanaians is taking a strong action against the NCA and other entities involved in blocking their SIM Card, after successfully completing their registration, some political leaders are however, blaming some Ghanaians for failing to participate in the process, leading to the alleged blocking of their chips.

Meanwhile, the National Communications Authority has come out to apologise to Ghanaians for creating such inconveniences and problems in the system. But they are not accepting the fact that, they are responsible for blocking the SIM Cards of Ghanaians who have successfully completed the process. They are rather shifting the blame to the Telecommunication Companies, who are only serving as the implementers of the punitive measures, issued by the NCA. What a dramatic irony?

There have been a lot of concerns about this whole process, and it appears that the government and the responsible entities are unwilling to call on key technical experts and experienced IT personnel to assist with the implementation of the policy, amidst the loopholes. Is this a difficult thing to do?

Some experts have even suggested to the responsible Institutions to synchronise the data in the National Identification Authority’s system (on the Ghana Card) with the data in the system of the Telecos. This should have been the best way to go.

Speaking on this same issue, Kamal-Deen Abdulai, a Deputy Communications Officer of the Patriotic Party ((NPP) made it clearer that the SIM Re-registration is being done to sanitise the system. It is to track criminals who are chancing on the identity theft business to enrich themselves, while compromising and stealing the data of innocent citizens. He further assured Ghanaians that there’s a deliberate attempt by all the stakeholders and key Institutions involved in the design and implementation of the policy to ensure data credibility. Kamal-Deen however admitted that there are some lapses in the entire process. “And honestly, the Ministry of Communications and Digitisation and the NCA should have been more proactive than they are now,” he hinted.

Meanwhile, he is also blaming some ‘stubborn’ Ghanaians for making the process a difficult one.

“Ghanaians don’t have a sense of urgency,” he said. Most of us would want to wait till last minute before we do what is right.

This is something we must not entertain because it delays the process, and increases the cost of implementing the policy as well.
