Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, pictures of Ghana’s former presidents and their interaction with the queen have been posted online. Many people has quizzed whether the current President, Akufo-Addo also met with the queen.
PK Sarpong a popular writer for the ruling NPP has set the recent straight. In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, 11th September 2022, he wrote that,
He wouldn’t have accorded the above issue with attention but for what some of these NDC minions are propagating out there to the effect that the dearly departed Queen Elizabeth II never met His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo but only our former presidents.
According to PK Sarpong, NDC are positing that only the presidents who are ‘Johns’ had the privilege to meet and interact with the late Queen Elizabeth II.Â
“As petty as this whole thing sounds, it is also important to set the records straight and to pale into insignificance the importance of the engagements between President Akufo-Addo and the late Queen Elizabeth II. ” He remarked.
President Akufo-Addo did not only meet Her Royal Majesty but also proposed a toast in honour of Queen Elizabeth II at the Buckingham Palace in April 2018, during a dinner for Heads of State of the Commonwealth. PK Sarpong remarked.
The Queen’s response to his toast brought back fond memories of some of the most greatest moments of her visits to Ghana which she heartily shared with President Akufo-Addo. He remarked.
President Akufo-Addo has maintained and strengthened Ghana’s relationship with Great Britain and Northern Ireland and has met and deliberated with every major player, both in the royal family the then Prince Charles (who visited Ghana in November, 2018), now King Charles III, and the political establishment to strengthen our bond of friendship.Â
PK added that facts are sacred and these facts cannot be controverted. When we have an opposition party that majors in the minors, then we are likely to be fed with some of these twisted facts.Â
“While I do not dispute the fact that all our presidents in the Fourth Republic have had one engagement or the other with the late Queen, those of President Akufo-Addo are elaborate and have had far-reaching but positive impacts in the relations between Ghana and Great Britain.” PK Sarpong added.
