SIM Card Blockings: I commend A-Plus for his bold move – Former NIA Executive Secretary

The multi-million question begging an immediate answer currently is: How did the Government manage do the Voters ID card for qualified voters within a very short period, during the era of COVID-19, but it is using ‘forever’ to complete the Ghana Card registration for the same citizens of this country?

Frankly speaking, it is clearly evident that the love of politicians usually vanishes immediately you give them the power to rule over you. It is at this point that one can actually understand the practical meaning of politics, which is “blood sucking”. Political leaders will continue to suck the blood of the masses, until their selfish interests are fully fulfilled. They are mostly of the view that, no matter what, citizens would have to elect someone to lead and spearhead the affairs of every sector of the country; hence, they can do whatever they like, to fulfill their personal aggrandizement.

Going further, any practical observer who is interested in Governance and Political Administration would realise that, there is low or very poor communication and collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Digitisation, the National Communications Authority and the National Identification Authority. This systemic loophole is accounting for the major inconveniences in the SIM card re-registration process. A process which was supposed to be simple, convenient and seamless has now become so cumbersome and bizarre.

Responding to the action taken by Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, especially in the Ghanaian political landscape, the former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority, Osei Kwame Griffiths, has commended and eulogised A-Plus for taking such a bold move, to file a petition to the court to ask the court to stop the NCA from exercising its punitive measures (that are leading to the blocking of SIM card of Ghanaians, those who have successfully completed their registration). He further revealed that the Minister for Communications and Digitisation does not have any legal right to block Sim cards. This is a blatant abuse of power. It is also an infringement on the rights of Ghanaians.

Both the NCA and NIA are in breach of the law. And the NCA must rescind its decision on the issuance of punitive measures. Everything does not seem so well, with regards to the introduction of the application for the SIM card re-registration, in particular.

Meanwhile, Griffiths has always argued that the Ghana Card never be used as a passport, as claimed by the government. It does not make any practical sense, as to why the Ghana card should be used as the sole document for the SIM card re-registration.
