7.8 Million Ghanaians Are Illiterates; Aged six and Older

Developed nations have a high rate of its citizens being able to read and write. Usually, States that are fortunate to have human resources well skilled are advanced. Against this background, Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has made known that about 7.9 million persons aged six years and older in Ghana are illiterates.

Very shocking as it might seem, these findings has a lot of implications to Ghana as revealed by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

On the world Literacy Day, it came up that 4.6 million of the illiterates were females and 3.3 million males, indicating a female disadvantage that has been persistent over time.

Over so many years, this canker has been persisting and government upon governments have instituted programmes to curb this problem.

Usually, these programmes are branded nicely such as, “Girl Child Education”.

GSS also made known that “The report also finds that between the 2010 and 2021 Population and Housing Censuses (PHC), 1.2 million more illiterate adults, 15 years and older were added to the population, from 4.3 million in 2010 to 5.5 million in 2021”. They maintained.

Further, this revelation has given the government every means to arrive at the appropriate measures to find a lasting solution to the canker hanging around the neck of the citizenry.
