News of the death of British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, has sent the entire world in a state of mourning with many leaders across the world commiserating with her family, government and people of the United Kingdom.
Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, September 8, 2022, age 96 at her home in Balmoral, Scotland.
Ghanaian leaders have also expressed their sympathy and eulogised the late Queen, who was the head of the British Colonial government that ruled Ghana for many years before the country gained its independence on March 6, 1957.
Ghana’s current President, Nana Akuffo-Addo has extended his condolence to the new British Monarch, King Charles III, the Royal Family and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
“My thoughts and the thoughts of all Ghanaians, at home and abroad, are with Queen Elizabeth II, the British Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth, the of which Ghana is a proud member, and her family in these difficult moments. I wish her the best and God’s blessings”, he said in a tweet.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I extend deepest condolences to the new British monarch, King Charles III, the @RoyalFamily, the Prime Minister, and the Government and people of Great Britain on the death, today, of HM Queen Elizabeth II”, the President said in another tweet.
In honour of the memory of the late Queen, President Akuffo-Addo has directed that all official flags in the country fly at half-mast for seven days from today, Friday, August 9, 2022.
Ghana’s Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also joined his boss, the President, in mourning the demise of the late Queen.
In a flier shared on his Twitter page, the Vice President said “with great sadness, I have learnt of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the affectionate Queen of the United Kingdom, and Head of the Commonwealth of which Ghana is a member”.
He added that “In her seven-decade-long reign, she was a staunch advocate of global development and a beacon of peace. I extend on behalf of my wife and family, condolences to the Kingdom, and the entire Commonwealth. Fare thee well HRM Elizabeth II”.
Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate for the largest opposition in Ghana for 2016 and 20202 elections, has also eulogised the late Queen Elizabeth II, Monarch of the United Kingdom.
In a post on his Twitter page, Mr Mahama says the Queen carried her royal duties with grace and dignity.
“Sad to hear the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. She carried her royal duties with grace, poise & dignity. An icon of pride not only to the British people but the Commonwealth.
“Our hearts go out to King Charles III and the Royal Family. May God grant her peaceful repose”, he tweeted.
Ghana’s former President. John Agyekum Kuffour in a short tweet says “Peace, Rest in Perfect Peace Your Majesty”.
The current Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, has also eulogized the late Queen.
In a post on Facebook, Mr Kyeremanten says “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, presided with a great sense of duty and dignity.May God grant her a peaceful rest”.
