Michael Essien used to be one of the top footballers on the National football team, Black Stars. He was also the former midfielder for the international football team Chelsea.

The retired footballer, Essien won four trophies with Lyon before joining Chelsea to add nine more honors to his trophy cabinet. He also won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, after losing in the finals in 2008 to Manchester United.

Michael Essien left the international football team, Chelsea because the coach refused to use him after he recovered from injury and kept benching him.
Hughton, who has met Essien on a few occasions, spoke highly of the former Black Stars player.

“My all-time greatest Ghanaian footballer would be Michael Essien. One because he was in London so I saw a lot of him when he played. I had the pleasure to meet him on a few occasions and to speak with him but he was a very influential player in I think what was the turnaround in what we are seeing now at Chelsea,” he told TV3 in a Q and A session.
