John Mahama ‘fights’ IMF over Ghana’s economic problems

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, former president of Ghana, has clashed with the International Monetary Fund over the real causes of Ghana’s present economic woes.

Ghana is currently in an economic quagmire, with ordinary Ghanaians suffering skyrocketing prices roundabout, the latest being an increase in utility bills.

The government, led by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, has blamed the current situation on the rippling effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

But this explanation has been slammed as a “layman’s excuse” by the main opposition party, the NDC, whose leader is former president Mahama.

Notwithstanding the back and forth banter between the government and the opposition, it is clear that the government’s approval rating has tanked in recent times. Many Ghanaians feel disappointed.

It is on this conversation that the IMF has indicated that Ghana’s economic woes are not internally generated. However, it is the result of external factors, the COVID and the war.

This position of the IMF has apparently irked Mahama, who has entreated the IMF to be “realistic” in their assessment of the Ghanaian economic situation.
