TV3’s Johnnie Hughes Must Apologise For Saying This About Ghana’s Yaw Osafo Maafo

Yaw Osafo Maafo is a Ghanaian politician born in 1942. He is a staunch member of the New Patriotic Party and was appointed in April 2021 as the senior Presidential advisor to the Akufo-Addo Administration.

Interestingly, Yaw Osafo Maafo served as the Senior Minister for the Republic Of Ghana, since 2017. He has more than 50 years of working experience in both the private and public sectors.

On Wednesday 7th September 2022, a TV3 broadcast journalist known as Johnnie Hughes, speaking about the effects of galamsey and the famous Aisha Huang case, made some references to comments made by Yaw Osafo Maafo.

According to TV3’s Johnnie Hughes, the former senior minister erred when he said the state would not gain anything if Aisha Huang was put behind Ghana’s “bars”.

” Why did you not prosecute her? We are happy to imprison our local people who are caught doing galamsey but we decided to spare Aisha Huang a few years ago. So Osafo Maafo did not see the wrong in the issue?”.

In the video played on TV3’s “Johnnie’s Bite” show, the Senior Minister revealed how the Chinese government was instrumental in developmental projects such as roads and felt the attention should be on the good relationship with them than prosecuting or sanctioning their citizen.

Johnnie vented his spleen on Osafo Maafo during his editorial. “How can someone who advises the president not see the need to prosecute Aisha Huang?”.

“The Attorney General ought to know what Osafo Maafo said in defence of sending her to her country. He is an 80-year-old but have we seen what decision he made the country to take”.

The former senior minister may not be perfect but Johnnie Hughes could have been a bit more polite in his submission.

Going forward, Johnnie Hughes should be more diplomatic in addressing issues with the elderly. What an elderly sees when he sits, does the youth see when he stands?

Would it be wrong if Johnnie Hughes apologises for how he made his remarks? Do you agree with Johnnie Hughes? What are your thoughts on the ongoing discussion?
