A Liberian national was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Accra High Court for attempting to transport cocaine, a narcotic drug, through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Bangkok, Thailand.
On Wednesday, August 31, 2022, the court presided over by her Ladyship Justice Mary Ekua Yanzuh punished Ms. Wolo Maikplay Margaret with ten thousand penalty units (GH120,000) in default and ordered her to serve three years additional imprisonment.
The accused pleaded guilty to two charges of attempted exporting and possession of a narcotic drug without a Minister of Health license, respectively, in contravention of sections 36 and 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
However, the presiding judge declared her guilty on her own plea on each count to be heard simultaneously.
Ms. Wolo Maikplay Margaret was seized by Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) personnel on the 14th of May 2022, while transiting through Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on a Qatar Airways flight from Monrovia to Bangkok, Thailand.
When commission officers conducted a physical search on her after getting a tip from a sister security agency at Kotoka International Airport, they discovered thirty (30) pellets containing cocaine weighing 277.2101grams beneath her breast and vagina (KIA).
The commission further emphasized that narcotic drug possession and attempted shipment are still illegal and punishable under domestic law.
It also reassured citizens of its continuous commitment to limiting the entrance and smuggling of all forms of narcotics through partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
