Some years ago, back in graduate school the vice Dean used to teach a well subscribed comparative law class.
This was a joint class taught between Harvard Law School and teking University in China. The Chinese Law students joined via video link seated in class.
One day, the Vice Dean, invited me as a guest to his class. He wanted to teach a class on China and Africa and wanted my perspectives; as a person with policy-making experience from Ghana.
During the class. One of the Chinese law students said something that made me lose my cool and go on a long monologue.
In discussing the terms of China’s relationship with Africa, she said “China is doing everything to help these people; but, it’s not our responsibility to take care of them just because they are poor. But these people please to help themselves; an andy is lazy”.
Nothing has pained me till that equals the emotions of anger, frustration, and indignation I felt that day in that class.
Without the swear words, my response was essential who then do you think you are talking to? Do you think people in Africa are kids, or just mindless people walking around waiting for Chinese pity?
This Aisha Huang story has brought back a scar, I thought I had so well hidden.
