Former president John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have come under fire from Charles Owusu for their remarks on Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah. On Sunday, August 28, Mr. Mahama expressed his worries on the Chief Justice and the Judiciary in general when speaking to a group of attorneys at a conference. According to him, the public is starting to make fun of the judiciary’s current leadership.
The former president claimed that the reputation of the judiciary has gotten so bad that many of the citizens openly mock the legal system and justices,’ Nowadays, rather than evoking the expectation of receiving genuine justice, the statement “Go to court” is welcomed with mocking laughter.
In order to remove the widely held notion of hostility and political bias in legal procedures in the highest courts of the land, he said, the Ghanaian judiciary must work urgently to earn the trust and confidence of the populace.
According to him, we unfortunately have no faith that the Judiciary’s existing leadership can oversee such a transformation. We can only hope that a new Chief Justice would oversee efforts to restore the damaged reputation that our judiciary has developed in recent years.
Charles Owusu criticized the opposition party and their 2020 presidential candidate for what he believed to be a deliberate attack on the Chief Justice during a response to John Mahama’s remarks on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” debate show.
He asserted that, “whether they like it or not, until his term in office would expire, he remains the Chief Justice,” despite the fact that “it appears that NDC as a party have an issue with Justice Anin Yeboah.”
