Is Ghana Truly Independent? –

Independency of any state or nation means that that state or nation has gained freedom from its colonial masters and it is therefore masters of its own daily affairs. Such State does no longer rely on its colonial masters for any direction and assistance but rather put measures in place to ensure total sovereignty. I believe strongly that even though Ghana gained its independence from colonial rule some sixty five(65) years ago, it cannot be said to be truly independent. There are certainly some elements that make it difficult for Ghana to be a true independent state. My argument will focuse on three key areas that indicate that Ghana is still at the beg and call of its colonial masters. These key areas are; decision and policy making, borrowing and the production of goods and services.

A country that do not have total control on its decision and policy making process is not fit to be called a true independent state.Since Independence, the country Ghana seems to be influenced by the Western world. Up to date, Ghana’s educational policy seems to be tilting the line of the British. How can a country that boast itself of independence make inferences from the British educational policy in order to draw its.The of subjects taught in our basic schools, secondary and even in universities are tailored to conform with that of Britain. Clearly a nation that still depends on the policies and decision of other countries certainly cannot be truly independent.

Ghana’s frequent borrowing from the Western world does not make it a true independent state.Since the days of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana has been borrowing. Ghana’s GDP as at the end of 2021 stands at 83. 54% the highest ever in the history of this country. Government upon government run to the Western countries for loans that come with huge interest. In the 2022 budget that was read in parliament, we were told that Ghana is looking forward to generating about 71 billion dollars. More than half the revenue when generated will be used to pay interest on money borrowed by the government. This clearly show that Ghana is not economically independent. We are told that an E-levy that is expected to generate only 7. 69 million dollars is the only savior to Ghana’s economy and without it our beloved country will be totally broken financially. Going to IMF looks like the next option if the controversial E- levy bill is not passed by parliament.

Ghana is endowed with so many of the world’s natural resources but it is unable to make any significant gains from it.We have gold, manganese, bauxite, cocoa, diamond, crude oil amongst others but we are one of the poorest countries in the world. Most of the world’s natural resources can be found here in Ghana but sadly, we have managed to become slaves to countries like China, USA and the rest. Our cocoa beans are imported in tons of bags to feed their multi-billion dollar companies while we wallow in poverty. We are unable to add value to our raw materials and this has made Ghana a great exploitational tool for the West to milk us off our own resources. This devastating state of the country raises a big question about Ghana’s independence status.

In conclusion, since Ghana cannot soley live up to its financial obligations and most times runs to the outside world for loans that come with huge interest, it is clear that this nation is not truly independent.
