Readers can recall how Metro TV Journalist, Paul Adom Otchere had campaigned for the building of the National Cathedral at a time many Ghanaians felt the time was not ripe.
Despite complaints about the fact that there was an economic challenge, the Government supported the building of the Cathedral with state funds.
In various reports available to the public, there has been mention of donations from churches, NGOs, privately owned companies and the government itself.
Interestingly, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral Administration, Dr Opoku Mensah has told the good people of Ghana that the Cathedral can only be built when the number of donations increases to a very large extent.
” We have suspended the construction of the National Cathedral due to the lack of funds. Of course, I still have faith that the project can continue”
“It can happen if 1 million Ghanaians can support the project with GHS100 on monthly basis. Out of the 30.8million Ghanaians, 21million are Christians and this is the time for Christians to support this good course”.
According to Paul Adom Otchere, the government invested huge money into the project but the report provided by Dr Opoku Mensah indicated that are no funds.
Paul Adom Otchere had no option but to express his worry during his editorial. He expressed worry about how huge donations were made and yet the building has been suspended for lack of funds.
” Where is the GHS200million that was paid into the account? The Redeemed church and others also paid money into the account. I do not want to go into it too much. Dr Opoku Mensah is an honourable man but he should tell us what the money was used for. How can the project stall with all those monies?
