President Akufo-Addo in a letter released yesterday decided not to renew the contract of the Commissioner of Customs at the Ghana Revenue Service. This didn’t come as a surprise because the Customs boss was already facing a lot of attacks hurled at his door. Colonel Damoah is under investigations from the Office of the Special Prosecutor for evading taxes on certain goods at the ports. In a series of press conferences, Col. Damoah tried to defend himself but this yielded no dividend.
Though the president refused to renew his contract, many have admitted that the Customs boss was sacked as a result of his involvement in the scandal directed at his office. On Pan African TV’s Good Morning Africa, Ama Pratt, the Managing Director of Pan African TV and daughter of Kwesi Pratt questioned why the President refused to renew the contract.
According to Ama, the mere sack and rather refuse to extend the contract is a clear sign that the former Customs boss was guilty. She insinuated that it was clear that Damoah was complicit and so the President should have sacked him based on that and not under any disguise. She boldly stated that President Akufo-Addo keeps failing to address the pertinent issues of the country because the President doesn’t have the balls to take certain decisions.
“This is not the answer to the question, is it? Saying that you are not going renew his contract isn’t the answer to the question. That can’t be a solution” Ama Pratt said
Ama insisted that this camouflage of an excuse shows that the President isn’t on top of the affairs of the country and consistently failing to do what is required of him. Ama Pratt has been one of the moderate critics of Akufo-Addo. She was one of those who felt Akufo-Addo could do well, but now disappointed. According to her, the performance of Akufo-Addo so far has added it look like John Mahama was a better manager. Many feel Ama like her dad is pro NDC but from her commentaries, Ama is more of a neutral and this makes her criticisms fair.
