You Are A Chief And So You Shouldn’t Be Debating Me In Public – Murtala Mohammed Tells NPP Panelist

Over the past one week Odike and Oyerepa FM have been in the news for certain comments the former made in the studios of the former. This led to a council of Chiefs in the Ashanti Region calling for a temporary closure of the FM and the banishment of Odike from Kumasi. Odike is a former presidential candidate and last week made certain comments that some fell attacked the integrity of Otumfuo.

Today, Monday, August 29, 2022 in the studios of GHOne, Murtala Mohammed, MP for Tamale Central criticized his fellow NPP panelist for lacking the guts to speak about certain issues. According to Murtala Mohammed, what Odike intended to say has been lost and rather the former 2012 presidential candidate is facing torment over the little that he said wrong.

Nana Fredua Ofori Atta, a government spokesperson called for Odike to be made to apologize because he had disrespected Asanteman with his comments. This was opposed by Murtala Mohammed who noted that his fellow panelist is a Chief and so lacked the boldness to speak on political issues. Murtala reminded Nana Fredua that it was for this reason that traditional leaders are not supposed to intervene in political issues.

Murtala questioned why Nana Fredua could debate him because his position as a chief prevented him from seeing the good in Odike’s statement and rather persecuting Odike for something he should have been applauded for. He noted that Nana is involved in a conflict of interest as to what Odike had said.

Nana Fredua didn’t take this lightly and called the host to note that Murtala was disrespecting him by saying that he should be barred from talking about political affairs. According to him whether he is a chief or not he has the right to choose sides when speaking on national issues.

The question however remains if Odike had to be banished even without his side being heard? Is it the case that Nana Fredua was being hard on Odike just because he is also of royal blood? Interestingly, the Kumasi Traditional Council has today pardoned Oyerepa and asked them to resume operations. The other matter of Odike is yet to be heard. Interesting times ahead.
