Over the past few months the Office of the Special Prosecutor has been trending. The office of Kissi Agyebeng made an expose on the Commissioner of Customs Division at the Ghana Revenue Authority. According to the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Colonel Kwadwo Damoah had connived with another to deprive the nation of taxes on some items that should have been taxed.
This led to Col. Damoah granting press conferences to defend himself and say that the Special Prosecutor is a small boy who wants to disgrace him. Well, the Office of the President had been taking note of all the accusations and counter accusations. In the end the President has called on Col. Damoah to handover duties to his deputy and step down.
According to the letter, the Commissioner was being asked to step down because his contract had ended. The president thanked him for his services as he leaves office. However, some questions are worth asking. Is it the case that the president is asking Col. Damoah to go on leave because of the recent scandals about him? Was the expiry of contract an excuse to sack the commissioner.
Again many have complained about the appointment and extension of contracts of old people. Was this a case of the president trying to heed to recent cautions and not extend pension related contracts? What could have made the president suddenly call on Col. Damoah to step down and allow his deputy to continue?
Is it the case that this is an admittance that the officer is guilty of the charges that Kissi Agyebeng is laying at his doors? For now, the big man who once called someone a small boy is going home. It has been a David and Goliath give and take and at the end the former looks like winning. The investigations are not over but like many others, the President might feel Col. Damoah had dealings in the corruption related case against him.
