Hon. Adwoa Safo Versus President Nana Addo: It’s ‘Show Time’ In Ghana

We all know, that honorable Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safa is one of the Ghana’s favorite Members of parliament and a minster of State.

We also know, that with her continues absence from parliamentary businesses, and also from her ministerial roles, Hon. Safo deserves some amount of punishments.

However, what we did not know was that, she will be maltreated by some Ghanaians, especially her own party members; and eventually get kicked out of government by the President.

There is no doubt, that Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo, the NPP Member of Parliament, for the People of Dome-Kwabenya Constituency; after suffering many attacks from her own party members; and eventually got sacked by the President, will soon be taking revenge on the president and the New Patriotic party (NPP) as a whole.

Hon. Adwoa Safo; who worked as the MP for Dome-Kwabenya, was summoned the the privileges committee of parliament, following her continues absence from parliament without permission; but is yet to present herself.

Also, (though parliament is yet to decide on her behavior), due to the same continues absence from her role, as the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection; according to the laws of Ghana, she was dismissed from office by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

Her dismissal; even though sparked many arguments among Ghanaians, it was supported by the majority of her party (NPP) members.

The NPP Majority (who is current pushing hard for her removal from parliament), believes that, Adwoa Safo’s continue absence from the House is affecting government businesses in parliament.

According to them, her continues absence amount to vacation of post, and so her removal from the Floor will pave way for a Bi-election in her constituency to fill-up the NPP’s ‘hole’ in parliament.

The point is, the president will be a ‘thousand times’ ready to sacked Adwoa Safo from the Gender Ministry, but will the Minority NDC and the Speaker of Parliament (who is also an NDC member), also be willing to let Adwoa Safo go? I dont think so.

I dont think so because; as we know, President Nana Addo’s second term in office was hit with a historic hung parliament (137 seats for NDC and 137 also for the ruling NPP, plus 1 Independent MP).

Though the independent MP has chosen to do business with the NPP (giving the NPP 138), the very latest situations in the House is appearing to be different, and that is why the NPP is seriously fighting to get the absentees out, to enable serious member to replace them.

The current update in parliament shows that, the NDC is down to 136 members, because the Assin North MP, has been bared by the Supreme Court, to stop attending parliament due to pending legal issues.

The Majority NPP group; who is suppose to have their full 137 members plus 1 (making 138), to form a ‘clear’ quorum for making decisions in the House, is also down by 1 (Adwoa Saffo). This means it will be very difficult for the ruling party to effectively do government businesses with 136 plus 1 in parliament.

As it stand now, it appears…that the Minority NDC; (and maybe the Speaker of Parliament), are not willing to let Adwoa Safo out of her seat; because if that happens…the NDC will start losing the ‘fights’ in the Floor, and almost ‘everything’ will start passing in parliament, as happened in the Nana Addo’s first term (when they had a clear majority).

One thing President Nana Addo and the NPP may not be aware of is that…Speaker Alban Bagbin is very experience in parliament; and when it comes to quorum calculations in the floor of parliament, he is a ‘wizard’.

If Nana Addo and the NPP think sacking the Gender Minister (Adwoa Safo) from office as a minister, will push the Speaker also, to call her seat ‘Vacant’ to enable a bi-election in her constituency, then that was a mistake.

In my view, Speaker Bagbin will not be that happy to order for Adwoa Safo’s removal from parliament; especially at this time, when we are trying to encourage more women into our politics and governance system; and also considering the nice excuse she gave as a mother (the care for her troubled son).

For me; the NPP must be ready for more ‘revenge stories’, from Sarah Adwoa Safo, because; even though she has been sacked from her office as Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, she will continue to be a Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency till the next elections and beyond.

That will be a ‘show time’ in the ‘NPP’s Ghana’.
