The Black Galaxies of Ghana has a foot in the 2023 edition of the CHAN tournament to be held in Algeria next year after defeating Nigeria by 2 goals to nil. Ghana will be going to Abuja for the return leg next week. That’s a healthy advantage we are sending to Nigeria. The performance of the guys will delight coach Annor Walker. I am sure he would have loved his boys to score more but will be delighted with the scores nonetheless.
It was a good output from our guys who started the game on the front foot pummeling the Nigerian defence but couldn’t find an opening within the first 45 minutes. They had the lion’s share of possession. They resumed the second half with the same energy and were duly rewarded with a penalty which Afriyie Barnieh dispatched with aplomb. Their lead was doubled in the dying minutes of the game by Seidu Suraj who pounced on a loose ball to seal victory for Ghana. The Nigerians couldn’t recover again and had an uphill battle to turn around the scores in the return leg.
Afriyie Barnieh has been exceptional for Ghana during the qualifiers. His performances have been top-notch. He carried the good form he ended the season with into the qualifiers and we are seeing the results now. He has scored in all the games played so far. The phobian contingent in the team has been awesome. They have delivered consistent performances. Seidu Suraj, Mohammed Alhassan, captain Gladson Awako together with Barnieh have been good ambassadors for Hearts. This augers well for Hearts who will be seeking to wrestle the title back from Kotoko next season.
The Black Galaxies will need to get a good result in Abuja next week to ensure their spot in Algeria next year is guaranteed. They will need to avoid losing by a two-goal margin. I believe they will sail through with a favourable result against the Nigerians.
