While many Ghanaians believe that the traditional authorities possess enormous powers to shut down radio stations, others think that Ghana is being governed by a constitution which implies are laws traditional ones are subservient to the Constitution.Â
All other laws that are not in line with our constitution are null and void. The once revered chieftaincy institution has been muddied because of some of its needless interferences in modern political and democratic dispensation. To them, the time has evolved and we are not in the stone age any longer.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, an Academician of the University of Ghana has openly declared that even though traditional authorities are revered and accorded due respect, they shouldn’t trespass upon the powers bestowed on them by the Constitution.
The gentleman’s assertion is about the recent outburst of Akwasi Addai popularly known as Odike on Oyerepa FM and how the traditional council summoned the radio station and chastised them. The station was ordered to shut down by the chiefs when management appeared before them.
This act according to the professor contradicts the Democratic form of government practiced in the country. He went further and scolded the management of the station for being ‘too weak’ to succumb to such an order.
