Why Recruit 5,000 SHS Graduates When NABCO Personnels Are Still Owed Several Months?

Recently government declared that, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), will recruit about 5,000 Senior High School (SHS) graduates by end of August 2022 to help with basic health care delivery on Community Health-Based Planning Services (CHPS) compounds across the country. This article seeks to raise some questions on this initiative.

How is the YEA going to pay the 5,000 SHS graduates they intend to employ to work in CHIPS compounds? What is the blueprint for this initiative?  Although latest information has it that they will be paid GHC400 a month, won’t the money be in arrears just like NABCO?

NABCO personals are still owed several months of unpaid allowances. Currently, pharmacists doing their housemanship (their equivalent of NSS) are yet to be paid a single month of an allowance since they started work on 28th January 2022. That is 7 months.

Youth in Afforestation, a creation under the then Sir John Leadership of Forestry Commission are also owed months of allowances.

Why do we keep doing these things when we know the end from the start?

Is it because we simply just have to create anything that looks like work, let the people who will be picked pretend to be working and the state also pretend to be paying them? Or we simply like the recurring reportage and demonstrations by such groupings over unpaid allowances.

There are thousands of trained nurses in Ghana who remain unemployed several years after completing their training.

Yet, the government of Ghana, through the Youth Employment Agency, wants to employ 5000 high school graduates to work in CHPS clinics across the country.

Why? Because the politicians will NEVER find themselves in a CHPS clinic. They will not be at the receiving end of the healthcare delivered by these High school students. My mother would.

The politicians will fly to Dubai, US and UK for healthcare at the expense of the taxpayer. They even take per diems while on admission abroad. This is the sad reality.
