The Savannah Regional capital Damongo came to a stand still on Wednesday when Nana Addo stormed the town in a grand style. The chiefs and people of the region trooped to the regional coordinating centre to welcome the president who had visited them for the first time since the region was created in 2019. Market women abandoned their jobs and students left the classrooms to catch a glimpse at the president.
Addressing the people, President Akufo Addo who was overwhelmed by the reception appreciated the support of the region in 2020 election victory of the NPP. He promised to do more in the region to ensure the people get the best of his administration.
President Akufo Addo commissioned a fertiliser plant in Damongo which was put up by Jospong Group of Companies under the flagship 1 District 1 Factory initiative. Nana Addo commended the CEO of the Joseph Siew Agyapong for his foresight and his determination to turn waste into useful commodity. He noted that the plant will employ thousands of Ghanaian youth when fully operationalized.
“It has been a perennial problem for our country. But, fortunately, for me, in my time, I came across a man who was prepared to partner with government to deal with the question of waste disposal in our country. And it has been one of the highlights of my government – the partnership that the government has made with the Jospong Group of Companies, headed by its Executive Chairman, Joseph Siaw Agyepong. I thank you Mr. Agyepong.
I note that any serious businessman that has a programme for development in my administration, and is seeking the partnership and assistance of government, this Government, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Government, will give him that support and partnership for us to develop the country together”, Nana Addo assured.
In his address, the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, stated that the plant is set up to receive, sort, process and recycle Municipal solid waste to produce organic compost for agronomic purposes in the sub-region.
He added that some of the plants also possess medical waste treatment facilities to treat and safely dispose medical waste, adding that other recoverable materials of the recycling process which include plastics and metal scraps will serve as input materials for the steel and plastic manufacturing sectors.
Meanwhile President Akufo Addo has once again blamed Ghana’s economic situation on Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian war. He said the decision to go to IMF cannot be blamed on his government because it is caused purely by international factors.
He however promised to bring the country out of the mess before he leaves office. This was contained in an interview he granted to a local radio station later in Damongo.
