‘I am Planing’ To Change The Constitution And Go For A Third Term President

According the the constitution of Ghana, No person shall be elected into the office of the President, more than twice; or for more than two terms.

Again the Constitution does not allow for a person, who had previously held the office of a President, for more than two terms of office, to run again.

With these conditions, the sitting president of Ghana, His Excellency President Nana Akufo Addo, is automatically disqualified from contesting for a presidential elections in Ghana after his second term ends; but this is not the same case with Former President John Dramani Mahama.

Before becoming a president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama served as Vice President to the late former President John Evans Fiifi Attah Mills; from January 2009 to July 2012. He later took office as president of Ghana, on 24 July, 2012, following the death of the late President Atta Mills.

After completing Atta Mill’s remaining term of office; John Mahama contested and won the December 2012 presidential elections, but losing the 2016 election after serving for only one term in office; making him the only one term president in the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

This means according to the Ghanaian’s constitution, Former President John Mahama is still eligible to contest another presidential elections; but could serve for only one term in office.

President Nana Addo on the other hands is getting close to the end of his second term in office; and come January 7, 2025, he will be a past president; but wait a minute; there are top big questions in the minds of some Ghanaians.

Considering all the brouhaha surrounding the use of the Ghana Card for the upcoming election; compiling a new voters register, and the recent appointment of new Supreme court judges; is President Nana Addo going ensure a free, fair and gun-shot free elections, come December 2024?

Will he and his ruling party hand over power peacefully to another elected president come January 7, 2025?

Many Ghanaians have began to worry about the current trend in Ghana, in regards to the way the Nana Addo=Bawumia Government is ‘touching’ things that they are not suppose to touch, or doing things that are not acceptably by the majority of Ghanaians.

The fears started, following the recent orders from the government, that without the Ghana card, no transactions will be possible.

Again; fear and panic began to increase; following the latest comments, from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, that the Ghana card will be use for the next elections.

This is very worrying; especially considering the fact, that majority of the population are yet to get a Ghana card, and the EC knew about this.

These latest actions from the NPP government calls for a great national concern, because we have heard stories pf many African leaders, who changed their countries’ constitutions order to stay in power beyond their constitutionally approved period.

The truth of the matter is, President Nana Addo has NEVER said or hinted; that he will change the country’s constitution in order to serve a third term; but considering the way the president and Vice are in hurry, to link the Ghana card to almost everything’ and also planning to use it for voting, we cant help but to guess, that the president is indirectly hinting Ghanaians; that “I am planning to change the constitution, to help me continue to stay in power”.
