The Deputy National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress, Edem Agbana has made a bold declaration about the upcoming NPP primaries which might feature a tight contest amongst some of the finest men in the New Patriotic Party. So far, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kojo Kyeremanten, Kennedy Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, Joe Ghartey amongst others are the few who might contest in the upcoming elections.
Reacting to a comment made by an insider in the Office of the Vice President that the primaries will be between Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, Edem Agbana explained that from the look of things, the contest might go in favor of the Agriculture Minister since he is leading. He explained that Dr. Afriyie Akoto is leading because most of the delegates are beneficiaries of the Planting for Food and Jobs.
“Stop deceiving yourself. Akoto Afriyie is clearly in the lead. He has 68 percent of delegates as beneficiaries of the Planting for Food and Jobs. Be there.”, he wrote as a comment.
Many people took this statement made by Edem Agbana as a sarcastic or ironic comment. But let us consider the chances of the NPP in the 2024 elections with the Agriculture Minister as flagbearer. Although most pollsters do not include Afriyie Akoto and others in their survey and their reason is that they receive insignificant support, there might something more to his candidature.
So far, both Dr. Bawumia and Alan Kyeremanten have expressed little or no interest in the Agricultural sector of the economy. And speaking to data and statistics, the agriculture sector is one of the major drivers of Ghana’s economy and it has contributed to reducing Ghana’s unemployment rate. And truth be told, Owusu Afriyie Akoto has managed to revamp the economic sector and this can be seen by the increasing growth rate in that sector ever since he became Minister. So we need someone like him to improve the economy since the Trade Minister and Economic Messiah have showed that they have nothing to offer
