Sad But True: Check 10 Factors That Show That NDC Cannot Form Next Government

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has started registration of new members. As a journalist and a party member, I visited the registration centres in my constituency in Ashanti region to monitor the exercise and to say the least I was disappointed at what I saw.

Some of the registration officials had no full idea about what they were doing. While some were registering only new members, others were re-registering all party members those who have their names in the party’s register. So I asked them exactly what they were doing and there were conflicting answers. One of them told me they received training for less than 30 minutes about the exercise hence they could not grasp the whole thing.

The last straw that broke the carmel’s back is while the registration was ongoing, a founding member of the party in the constituency stormed the center to give new orders to the officials which contradicted what they were tasked by the national and regional team to do. Out of anger, the officials decided to halt the exercise and all members who came around to have their names captured in the party’s register started leaving. It took my intervention to convince the officials to stay back and do what they were instructed by the national team to do. By then about 70% of party members who had come to register their names had left.

After the dust had settled, a friend whispered to me “NDC cannot form next government

I was surprised to hear this coming from this noble man because I as on the campaign trail with him in 2020. I asked him what he meant by that and what he told me is the basis of this article.

He told me that NDC is not prepared to take over power because as at now, it has not taken steps to have its members get the Ghana card. He stated that from the way the electoral commission is behaving, the Ghana card will be used to vote in 2024 and not any voter ID. He revealed that his intelligence had it that the EC has lost parts of its data and will seek to retrieve same through the NIA. He added that the EC may have to compile a new register for 2024 and the sole identification tool will be the Ghana card.

As if these were empty threats, I stumbled upon a piece of write up on social media which serves similar caution. The anonymous writer gave 10 facts to show that the NDC is not prepared to take over power in 2024. Check his facts below.

1. The NPP is more focused than the NDC. Their main agenda is to break the 8, irrespective of their performance in government. Hence the NPP is currently actively putting together a machinery to win the election, fair or foul (emphasis mine).

2. Almost all institutions in Ghana, private or public, the media and Church, have therefore been compromised by the NPP. They see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.

3. My friend thinks the NDC does not appear to know the kind of opposition they are dealing with. That Nana Addo is a man who likes legacies. He does not mind doing anything to break the 8, even if the military will kill 1000 people in 2024 for the NPP to win.

4. The NPP has collapsed almost every business that could generate some funding for the NDC as well as financial institutions that the NDC could use to bring in funding from abroad.

5. On the NDC, my friend thinks, this is the weakest National Executive body the party has produced in an opposition era. In his words, he believes most of the executives are ‘rubbish’. Most of the party officials are always going round begging for money from the NPP members.

6. That so much wrong has been done by the Nana Addo and Bawumia government but the NDC has not taken the slightest advantage as we saw with the NPP under Mahama. The election ought to be won before 2024.

7. My friend also thinks that John Mahama is too nice for an opposition leader. That Mahama is unable to make tough decisions as a leader. He wants to please everyone.

8. That the NDC of 2004-2008 is non-existent. The one we have now has become a people of scramble for attention, authority and power within the party. Even MPs don’t like others because some feel others are over working. He cited how some MPs don’t like Ablakwa because they think the guy is ‘doing too much’

9. That the EC had become an enabler of who wins the election and no longer a referee. The EC has taken a side.

10. That based on the above points, the only options for the NDC are strategy and the streets, just like they did prior to 2008. However, the streets have been deserted by the NDC.

Do you agree that NDC will lose 2024 if things remain the same? What can the party do to change its fortunes? Take to the comments section to share your thoughts.
