Egyapa Mercer, Deputy Energy Minister and Isaac Adongo, MP for Bolgatanga joined Randy Abbey on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana. They discussed issues relating to the pressing matter of conflict of interest when it comes to government appointees and their private businesses. This matter became topical after Kwasi Kyei Darkwah popularly called KKD attacked Ken Ofori Atta for using his Databank to enrich himself while serving as minister.
On Good Morning Ghana today, Tuesday, August 23, 2022, Isaac Adongo appeared in the studios with an Excel sheet where he had stated the capital of some financial institutions in Ghana. According to the vocal NDC MP, some of the companies that broker for Ghana on the international market don’t have the needed capital and yet because they have big wigs in power, they get those contracts.
This didn’t please Egyapa Mercer who felt if Adongo had evidence he could have gone to the necessary authorities to address the issue. When Randy questioned if indeed some of these companies lacked the financial capital to operate or negotiate for Ghana, Egyapa Mercer felt infuriated and insisted that he cannot rely on a mere A4 sheet and declare if the companies had the muscle power or not.
Egyapa Mercer called on Adongo to go and get his facts right and then seek redress on that instead of sitting on TV and peddling allegations against people he has no evidence against.
Questions are being raised as to why financial institutions belonging Adu Boahen and Ken Ofori Atta are the main brokers for Ghana. Some have argued that other institutions which even have the muscle power to trade on behalf for Ghana have been ignored just so that private firms of belonging to government appointees will have their way. Ken Ofori Atta has claimed he has pulled out of Databank but Martin Kpebu and others claim he still has more than 11% shares in Databank.
