Tension Brewing In NDC Over Chairmanship Race As Asiedu Nketiah Plot To Unseat Ofosu Ampofo

An ominous rumblings of discontent is brewing among the rank and file of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as they prepare to elect new national and regional executives to steer affairs of the party towards the 2024 elections and beyond.

The National Chairmanship position of the party is seriously being courted by the General Secretary Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah while the incumbent Samuel Ofosu Ampofo is very much gunning to be retained.

While Mr Asiedu Nketiah and Mr Ofosu Ampofo may look like close and trusted pals in public, murmurings from the party’s Adabraka Headquarters suggest all is not well between the two.

The murmurings further suggest that Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s ambition is causing disquiet among the NDC’s rank and file.

Sources say the contest between the two leading figures in the NDC could potentially harm the party’s chances in the forthcoming general elections in two years’ time.

The two are household names in the NDC, commanding huge followings and influence across the various levels of the party.

While Mr Asiedu Nketiah may slightly be ahead of Mr Ofosu Ampofo, in terms of influence at the grassroots level, any contest between the two will not be easy for either of them and the unity of the party may suffer in the end.

The source further disclosed that elders of the party are not happy with the two’s decision to go against each other especially at a period where NDC is preparing for a crucial election in 2024.

Elders of the NDC party, sources say, are currently engaging both Mr Asiedu Nketiah and Ofosu Ampofo for one of them to step aside for the other in the Chairmanship race. However, it is left to be seen whether they could be persuaded.

Asiedu Nketiah was first elected general secretary of the NDC in November 2005 and has since been retained in the position.

Ofosu-Ampofo, on the other hand, was elected national chairman at the NDC’s national delegates’ conference in 2018 at the Fantasy Dome – Trade Fair Centre in Accra.

The NDC Regional and National internal elections have been slated for October and November, respectively, this year, but the Ward and Branch contest are currently ongoing and it will be followed by the Constituency elections.
