Mr President, Don’t Leave Office Without Solving This Issue – Joy News Reporter Tells Akufo-Addo

One of the aging problems the country has relates to the problem with galamsey. Successive governments have done little to save Ghana’s waters from pollution from the activities of those involved. Indeed, when President Akufo-Addo came to power he made a bold statement that he was ready to put his presidency on the line to make sure he deals with this menace.

He set up committees and task forces to fight against galamsey. However, this didn’t end it. His own appointees have been accused of being involved in the act. Araba Koomson, a Joy News reporter on the Joy Editorial has questioned the president’s resolve to solve the issue relating to galamsey. According to Araba, either the president doesn’t have the men or the men he has placed to fight it are fighting him the president.

The journalist urged Akufo-Addo to do more before he leaves office. She espoused that in the last 2 years of Akufo-Addo’s tenure he needs to redeem himself and clear all doubts that see him as not serious with the fight.

“How many have been prosecuted? How many have been arrested. This government have sunk money to stop galamsey. Mr. President, in 2 years your tenure will expire. Time is on your side to stop this menace. We remember all your assurances about galamsey, but what is there to show for it? We need deeds not words” Araba Koomson said.

In a recent tariff increase by the PURC, the outfit blamed the new costs partly to the pollution of some of the water resources. They argued that they had to buy more chemicals to purify the water.
