There has been an argument that leadership has nothing to do with one’s educational qualification. And that argument and debate can be settled with the different sets of leaders Ghana has had. Take into consideration, the educational background of both President Nana Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Both have an excellent educational background. President Nana Addo has a law background and Dr. Bawumia has an excellent economic background.
Yet, the economy of Ghana is getting no better. In a recent interview, one Presidential Hopeful, Kwabena Duffour, made another interesting appeal ahead of the 2024 elections to the people of Ghana. Kwabena Duffour urged Ghanaians to consider electing a different person who has some business education background. He urged Ghanaians into electing someone who is established in the business world. He said Ghanaians have tried lawyers and now it is the time for business people to take over.
“Going forward, we have had a lot of lawyers as President. Kuffour is a lawyer. Professor Mills is a lawyer. Nana Addo is also a lawyer. Shall we try some business people with a lot of business background? We need people with experience in the business. Because we have that situation and we need someone like that to rescue Ghana”, he explained.
When Mahama selected Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman as running mate, the NPP was very particular about her literature background. Here we are with a Vice President who has a strong economic background but the exchange rate has plummeted more than ever before.
Thus the call for a leader who has a business background does not hold. What matters is that there will be a change in the attitude of the leaders themselves irrespective of their background. Also, the constitution, which is the superstructure of governance in Ghana, must be amended immediately. This is because it is proved futile over the past few years.
