Every now and then, journalists are accused of been bias and partial towards one political party instead of hosting a level playing field for all parties for Ghanaians to judge for themselves. Always, accusations of bias are from the opposition, National Democratic Congress. They make this assertion because of the amount of criticism they received from the mass media when they were in power juxtaposed to the relative silence of the mass media now.
Journalist with TV XYZ and Power FM, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, has finally spoken about the style of journalism been witnessed in the current administration. He refused to associate himself with the title “journalist” so far as this administration is concerned. Okatakyie sarcastically explained that he has never ceased to understand why some people still refer him as a journalist. According to him, he has never wanted to be a journalist neither will he ever wish to become a journalist.
Okatakyie explained boldly that journalism in Ghana is a “breeding ground for thieves and extortionists”. He further argued why he believed journalists have become corrupt.
“They are not paid well so to survive, they have become guard dogs for some corrupt regimes like what we are experiencing in Ghana now. I refuse to be what anyone wants me to be. I am who I am and that is the way it shall be”
If this claim from Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah is true, that he is not a journalist, then the first question which comes into mind is, if you are not a journalist, then what role are you playing at TV XYZ? Also, Ghanaians might want to know if Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah is doing a free service of hosting shows on these Pro-NDC stations. He can possibly pass of as a normal political activist who just buys airtime on these television stations to host shows on them. But there is no proof to that assumption, thus we just have to stick to the fact that he is a journalist.
