It is barely two years to election 2024. Despite this, elections campaigns have already started among the 2 biggest parties in the country. For the NDC there is a high possibility that John Mahama will lead the party in 2024. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang will be retained as his running mate. Both candidates represented the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 elections.
For the ruling New Patriotic Party things look dicey as the party will have to traverse the difficult task of electing a new face to lead the party. It will be a keen contest as Alan Kyerematen and Mahamudu Bawumia will have to fight to the wire to see who wins. Interestingly, a third force in the form of Kennedy Agyapong has joined the race.
In a post on Facebook this morning Wednesday, August 17, 2022, popular social media political commentator and former musician, Kwame Asare Obeng, popular called A-Plus has made some strong analogies regarding the 2024 elections. In a photo showing a football player on a stretcher, A-Plus noted that a certain political party will get a yellow card even when they are on a stretcher. He also mentioned that that political party will seek for sympathy votes but will still lose in 2024.
Ghana tags herself as a multi-party state but actually it is a 2 party state with the ruling New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress always fighting for power. In 2024, who looks like getting sympathy votes? For the NPP they will present a new face while the NDC will retain an old face. It may look then that John Mahama will be the one looking for sympathy votes from Ghanaians after being rejected in the last 2 elections.
It could also be the case that Bawumia will seek to get votes from churches that he visits, with the hope that their vote will count for him in 2024. Yes, indeed, he might get the votes of some but as to whether he can amass many votes from that sector might be uncertain. Alan also comes in with a tag on his head that it is his time to lead since he stepped down for President Akufo-Addo. But will that be enough to make him win?
