The Kenyan Electoral Commission yesterday announced the results of the national elections held in the country. The election was a 2-horse race between William Ruto and Raila Odinga. The former is the current Vice President while the latter is a former Prime Minister. The elections were interesting because the incumbent President reneged and threw his support for the opposition Raila Odinga.
The margin of victory was less than 200,000 and William Ruto was made to sweat to get this victory. Raila Odinga is now 77 years old with William Ruto turning 56 in December. On TV3’s New Day today Tuesday, August 16, 2022, Johnnie Hughes interviewed H.E. Eliphas Barine, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana on the just ended Kenyan elections.
Johnnie has one of the journalists who has questioned why old men are elected into office in Africa. He has frequently lambasted Akufo-Addo for mismanaging the country because he is old. According to him the president cannot act because of his age and this has allowed his appointees to enrich themselves and mismanage the economy.
Johnnie Hughes questioned the diplomat if Kenyans took the age factor in mind when voting for William Ruto. In a sharp response, H.E. Barine noted that he doesn’t think age was a factor. He however explained that Ruto had a better message for the Kenyan people. He added that the message of improving on the lives of the people no matter the status was what won the election.
Ghana will be going to the polls in 2024. By 2024 John Mahama who looks likely to lead the NDC will be 66 years while Bawumia will be 61 years. Alan Kyerematen will be 69 years in 2024 if the NPP choose to go with him. Will the age factor win or the election will be based on policies?
