Today on TV3 Newday show hosted by Johnnie Hughes was an even bigger guest in the person of Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Food and Agriculture. It was a heated interview on TV3 today as Johnnie Hughes aimed at getting some responses for Ghanaians.
In the interview, Johnnie Hughes asked him about some statistics in the Agric census report by the Ghana Statistical Service which says most of the farmers most people in agriculture are old people. The Ministry is not doing well enough to get the younger, energetic and educated men and women on board.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto saw this statement made by Johnnie Hughes as untrue and demanded an evidence to support that. The Agric Minister, according to him is not like that. The Agric sector is full of energetic young men and Ghana Statistical Service have never said nor stated such in any of their document.
Johnnie Hughes insisted it was published in a document by the Ghana Statistical Service with a yellow cover. He stated that because most of them are old people according to the Ghana Statistical Service, they wouldn’t have that much knowledge about machinery since most of them are illiterate. Hence wouldn’t help with production.
After Johnnie Hughes have made that statement, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto said “I’m challenging you to bring that document out. Ghana Statistical Service have never said this anywhere. And I tell you the perception you have that they are illiterate and so does not know anything about machinery is false. You have no idea what they are capable of. With what you just said I will require evidence before I will believe this so produce it. What do you even mean when you say old age?”
Johnnie Hughes came in again to explain to the Agric Minister, ages from 50 above. And he want to ask him whether he sees young people engaged in agriculture when he visit his hometown? They are all mostly old men and women. The Agric Minister still disputed it, saying they are capable of using the machinery and are not old like Johnnie is alleging.
