Readers can recall how Asante Kotoko has been in the news for trying to rebrand their jersey with the image of the Asantehene. It can also be reminisced how the likes of King Faisal’s Alhaji Grusah spoke vehemently against using the image of the King for their jersey when they could win or lose matches. Other Ghanaians also indicated that the King stood for all clubs and they did not support designing jerseys with the images of such a great traditional leader.
The Asante Kotoko was founded in August 31st 1935 by thirteen young men led by a young driver, Mr. Kwasi Kumah,ably supported by LY. Asamoah, an electrician.
The football club is owned by the Ashanti King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the team has won 24 league titles. It is an undeniable fact that Asante Kotoko is one of the most successful teams in Africa.
It is interesting to note that the football club has finally revealed their revised club jerseys and this time , they took off the image of the revered king. Does this strike the fact that the club management is a good listener? Should Ghanaians hail the management of Ashanti Kotoko for their decision of using the image of the sponsors of the jersey and excluding that of the King?
In fact, Kotoko fans all over the world have finally reacted to the new Jersey. Whilst some applauded the club for taking the ‘needful revision’, others felt hurt that the King’s image was taken off and they vented their spleen at the club management.
Other Kotoko fans indicated that the revision was a good one and it was only helpful that they listened to the likes of Alhaji Grusah.
