Yesterday was Founder’s Day and there has been so much controversy concerning that holiday. The holiday was instituted by President Akufo-Addo when he came to power. The August 4 holiday came in and replaced the July 1 Republic Day holiday. Interestingly, Ghanaians are confused as to where they need to put the apostrophe and ‘s’ when it comes to the spelling of Founders’ Day. Akufo-Addo felt it is right to celebrate all those who helped to bring the end to colonialism.
This however runs contrary to the Nkrumaists who believe that the day should belong to Nkrumah and be referred to as Founder’s Day. According to the Nkrumaists, it is true that Nkrumah didn’t bring about independence alone but he was the leader that fueled it.
On Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom Otchere sent a simple message to Kwesi Pratt, the managing editor of the Insight Newspaper. Kwesi Pratt has been one of advocates of Kwame Nkrumah as the sole founder of Ghana. Paul Adom Otchere on his show paid tribute to Kwesi Pratt as one of the few people who have stood with the Nkrumah argument. He mentioned that he and some others are trying to change the philosophy of Mr. Pratt and his socialists to come to terms with Founders’ Day.
Paul recounted how in 2017 Kwesi Pratt invited him to the Socialist Forum to speak on the history of politics when discussions of founders’ day started then. According to Paul he set out his arguments right and had to convince the gathering which had Pratt, Sylvanus Tamakloe, Hudu Yahya, Lee Ocran etc. Paul maintained that he is still waiting since 2017 for an another invitation to speak on the Socialist forum. Paul noted that he is ready and is expects that an invitation will come from Kwesi Pratt soon.
It is interesting that while Paul awaits an invitation from Kwesi Pratt, he has another invitation request to honor. Over the past week, Murtala Mohammed, MP for Tamale Central has been engaged in a banter with Paul over issues regarding by elections in 2 constituencies. Murtala Mohammed has asked for a one on one with Paul, but that invitation is unlikely as the latter is not ready for such a banter on his show.
