The Ayidiga Island, sometimes known as Idiga for short, is located 26 minutes by car or 19 kilometers from Keta. The Keta Lagoon, Ghana’s longest and largest lagoon, contains it. The distance from the shores of Afiadenyigba, a town known for its salt mining, via boat is around 60 minutes.
Idiga’s population formerly reached 500 people, but it is now only 130. The Idiga family has been there for more than 200 years, spanning three generations. After establishing there, their grandfather gave the area the name YEDZIGA, which is Swahili for “I want it big.” Apart from water, the island is without electricity and other facilities. Over 50 baobab trees can be found among the lush vegetation on the white, smooth sand planet. On the Island, there are two groups of communities. Salt miners, farmers, and fishermen make up the population. Nowadays, though, there isn’t much farming activity there.

You will be able to walk 5 kilometers to the island once the lagoon recedes. The Island is renowned for its spirituality and as a destination where people go to get assistance with their issues.
The island offers a breathtaking scenery for tourism and can accommodate the development of attractions such as rides on the lagoon and tree houses on the baobab.
In fact, I stumbled into the island by accident while enquiring about whether there was an island with residents in the lagoon.
