Akuffo-Adoo’s Nephew Advocates For Legalisation Of Wee

Prominent Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere Darko is advocating for the legalization and commercialisation of Indian hemp, also known as “Wee”.

Gabby believes this will boost the country’s economic fortunes, if accepted.

In a series of tweets yesterday, Gabby Otchere-Darko, who is also the nephew of President Akufo-Addo, vent his disappointment in the ruling of the Supreme Court which said the law on license to grow cannabis in small-scale quantities for industrial and medicinal purposes in the country is unconstitutional.

On July 28, the Supreme Court in a 4-3 majority decision ruled that it was unconstitutional for a section of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019) to allow for a license to be granted for the cultivation of small quantities of cannabis for industrial and medicinal use.

Gabby however said he is hopeful the decision will be reversed at the court when the case is reviewed.

“A disappointing decision in my view and I’m not alone. Thankfully, it was a 4, 3 split decision. We hope and should be confident that a review application, if filed, will be successful. The issue about commercializing cannabis for good use is epochal”, he tweeted.

“It’s however important to note that the court did not make a moral pronouncements on cannabis but had a procedural issue with the application of the law in conformity with the constitution”, he said

This is the second time Gabby is talking about the need to legalize and commercialize cannabis on twitter. He made a similar call two weeks ago on the same platform.

Considering Gabby’s influence in his Uncle’s government coupled with the fact that he does not advocate for anything out of nothingness, it will not be farfetched to say that the government is exploring the possibility of legalizing cannabis and commercializing the same for industrial and medicinal use.
