The Founder of the Danquah Institute, Solicitor and Barista, Mr Gabby Otchere Darko has expressed his disappointment in a Supreme Court decision against commercial cultivation of Indian hemp in Ghana.
It will be recalled that few weeks back, Mr Gabby Otchere Darko made a post on Twitter to express hope in the ability of India hemp to transform the Ghanaian economy. He cited examples of other nations that have begun taking advantage of the plant to transform their economy. In the post, he stated that Ghana has a potential to create a whole new economy from the cultivation of the plant.
Mr Gabby, indicated that with Parliament permitting, and the fact that there is available market for the plant, the country can make huge strides with the cultivation of the crop.
Based on this, he was hopeful that the Supreme Court will accordingly grant 100% approval to commence the cultivation of the crop in the country. Nonetheless, according to Gabby, a split decision 4:3 lead to the rejection of the motion to approve it for commercial cultivation in the country.
Mr Gabby expressing his disappointment in the court ruling said emphatically that “A disappointing decision, in my view.” He further added that he is not the only one that was disappointed in the decision and therefore added that “and I am not alone.
Gabby Otchere Darko noted “A disappointing decision, in my view, and I am not alone. Thankfully, it was a 4:3 split decision. We hope and should be confident that a review application, if filed, will be successful. The issue of commercialising cannabis for good uses is epochal.”
He added that “It is, however, important to note that the Court did not make a moral pronouncement on cannabis but had procedural issues with the application of the law in conformity with the Constitution.”
Gabby is hopeful a review can reverse the ruling.
