This year has seen a number of demonstrations and sit down strike actions against the government. Interestingly, the country is government by a president who was an activist campaigning for better living conditions. There is a brewing feud in the law field. This has arisen as a result of a new policy that the Ghana Legal Council has introduced where law school entrants had no right to protest examination results and couldn’t ask to see their marked papers or marking schemes.
These are just a few of the new policy. Many have complained about this treatment saying it will deny Ghana of good upcoming lawyers. Speaking on Joy News’ The Pulse, Hassan Asare, President, National Association of Law Students, explained that some of these arbitrary reforms must stop. He called on the GLC to make processes transparent.
Hassan asked why many institutions in Ghana lack lawyers and yet the GLC headed by the Chief Justice, Anin Yeboah have closed up the system to prevent more people from becoming lawyers. He boldly stated that if things get worse they will have no option but to demonstrate on the streets. The demonstration of students and some lawyers will be aimed at getting Parliament and President Akufo-Addo in intervening in these new measures the GLC has imposed.
Referencing last year’s 499 students who passed but were denied entry to the Law School, Hassan Asare said the country was nearly denied of brilliant students who had passed. It took President Akufo-Addo to intervene and get the new students admitted. Hassan Asare called on the GLC to rather improve their infrastructure and open up the system to allow more people into the law field. Lawyers like Kofi Bentil and Kweku Azaar have called on the GLC to remove these impediments and allow all who pass to enter the law school.
