The Minority Group in Parliament has just this evening urged that President Akufo-Addo direct Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization, to extend the deadline for the SIM card re-registration exercise.
The deadline, which is set for July 31, “holds potential national security implications for millions of Ghanaians who have not been able to register, due to no fault of their own,” said Sam George, deputy ranking member on the communications committee, in a statement to the media.
He continued, “We implore the President and the Minister of National Security to take cognizance of the fact that millions of Ghanaians earn a living by using their SIM cards on a daily basis.”
The group claims that after engaging with the communication minister unsuccessfully, they turned to calling on the president.
Although their calls have not been answered, Mr. George stated that “we would resist, using all lawful methods at our disposal, any attempt to deprive our citizens and constituents of the use of their SIM cards beginning August 1st as a result of this malicious, ill-intended, capricious, obnoxious, atrocious, and whimsical directive of the Minister of Communications and Digitalization.”
The Group also urged the National Communications Authority to demonstrate their competence and technical abilities by notifying the sector minister of her actions’ improper behavior.
The Ningo-Prampram MP went on to assure the telecom companies that the Minority will “continue to use all means available to us and Parliament to ensure that their operations are not impacted by poor policy decisions made by those in charge today.”
We want to reassure the telecom companies operating in our jurisdiction that we, as a minority, are concerned about their well-being and operations, because anything that affects their operations affects their constituents,” he added.
MTN Ghana, a global leader in telecommunications, has started a plan to re-register millions of its customers as the SIM registration drive comes to an end at the end of July 2022.
