Do We Get Any Nutrients From Wele (Cowhide)? – Ghanaians React

Many Ghanaians have expressed and shared their views on the question, what nutrients do we get from Wele (cowhide).

The natural, unbleached skin and hair of a cow is called cowhide. It retains the original coloring of the animal.

Cows are sometimes killed specifically for their skin and processed into leather. Products such as leather jackets, shoes, belts, wallets, among others, can be produced from cowhide.

However, in the Ghanaian society, a common delicacy eaten by people of all classes, irrespective of age and , is cowhide, popularly known as ‘wele or kahuro.

A user on a Facebook group named Tell It All asked about the health benefits or nutrients we get from Wele.

Benefits

In an interview to ascertain the nutritional value of “Wele”, the head of the Nutritional Unit at the Ghana Health Service, Mr.Jacob Armah said ” Lots of Ghanaians consume ‘Wele’ because of its affordability and they see it fun when chewing it.

Mr. Jacob Armah said it could even cause cancer but was quick to say that, painstaking research conducted by behealth Africa has revealed that cowhide ( Wele) contains a nutrient called collagen and small quantities of carbohydrates, phosphorus, fibre, calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

According to the research collagen, when cooked from gelatin which contains at least eight essential Amino acids along with non-essential Amino acids. It is therefore regarded as having low biological value.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies when we are young. So it is, therefore, advisable to take collagen as we grow because it prevents wrinkles.

Cowhide cannot be taken as a Protein source since it is less nutritional. He advised that meals with “Wele” should be complemented with other rich sources of protein such as soybean, seafood, eggs, milk etc.
