Top 10 African footballers who played for Chelsea

The two-time UEFA Champions Chelsea is one of the most celebrated and supported clubs in Africa because of its consistent recruitment of African Superstars to play for them over the years

The Club’s success in the history of world Football has been with at least one or two African players before they achieve that feat.

This article aims at highlighting the performance of African players from Derek Smethurst, the first Africa Player for the Blues to the current crop of African heroes in the team.

According to my assessment, these are Chelsea’s All-time top African Footballers

Victor Mosses is one of the best African talents to play for Chelsea, He join Chelsea from Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee of €11.5 million il in 2012, unfortunately, he spent most of his playing time on loan away from the Club nevertheless he had a great season at Chelsea before joining Spartak Moscow in 2021 for €5 million. John Obi Mikel is also one of the most underrated African players of his generation, the highly talented midfielder was restricted in his playing at Chelsea so many could not witness the exceptional skills he had, Mikel join Chelsea from FK Lyn for a fee of 20 million in a transfer saga with Manchester United at that time, He played over 400 matches for Chelsea. John Obi Mikel won the Champion League, 2 Premier League titles,1 Europa League,4 FA cups and many more

Michael Essien’s energy at Chelsea is the reason many Ghanaian are now supporters of the west London clubs, the Defensive Midfielder took the Chelsea midfield by storm after he join the blues from Lyon for a record fee of 38 million, He scored 17 premier league goals in his nine-year stay at Chelsea. Essien won the Champion league,2 English premier league titles,3 FA cups and many more

The Most decorated Africa Player to ever grace the football field is Didier Drogba, He is not only the Greatest African player to play for Chelsea but one of the greatest in the world. He won 4 English Premiership, 4 FA Cup, and 3 league cups, He has certainly the Greatest African to play for the London Club

He played 164 EPL matches and played 104 goals with 64 assists. In the Champions League, he played 92 matches and scored 44 goals
