Mahama Finally ‘Vindicated’ :GES Set To Review SHS, Parents To Pay Some Component, Director Confirm

Former President John Dramani Mahama once told Ghanaians that an outright implementation of the free SHS will surely be a disaster, and advised that it should be implemented on a gradual basis. The first gentleman of the land foresaw the challenges that might come as a result of the policy. Hence, he began the social intervention policy from a certain stage when was voted out of power.

Unfortunately, many who didn’t seem to understand the perspective of the then President disagreed with him vehemently. At a point, he even suggested the review of the free SHS policy, but critics said that the review was meant to cancel.

Fast forward, Dr. Opoku Amankwah the director general of the Ghana education service has hinted that his sector is reviewing the policy to determine how much parents can pay. The parents are to bear a certain cost which the government will relinquish to them.

Mahama has truly been vindicated as many who didn’t understand him will now realize their mistakes. He was concerned with the sustainability of the program and had taken some pragmatic steps to address it.

Strangely, there was already a provision in our constitution that demanded that we start the free SHS progressively simply to avoid such situations as what we find ourselves in now. Media Personality Bridget Otoo recalled the words of Mahama and posted them on her Facebook page.
