Meet An African Kingdom Palace Built Like A Big Snake With Two Giant Heads(PHOTOS)

The Foumban Royal Palace is a historical building in the city of Foumban, capital of Noun. It is the seat of the Kingdom of Bamum, where the Chief-Superior of the peoples of the valley of the East bank of the Noun resides.

The royal palace of Foumban, where the king of the Bamum still resides today, was built in 1917. The palace has a fascinating museum providing historical insight into the region and the Bamoun dynasty.

The diversity of the objects featured in the museum is remarkable; it includes among other handmade furniture, paintings, pictures, statues, manuscripts, masks, and royal clothes. It was built to take the form of a big snake with two giant heads. The entrance is the serpents mouth with two protruding long fangs.

To me this is the best museum in Cameroon, because it is entirely dedicated to its people, the Bamun people, its history coming from the Tikar plateaux, the kingdom’s expansion, its interaction with its neighbors, islam, and then with the German and French colonizers. It goes through the different Bamun dynasties.

If you come to Foumban you’re here for the palace. And you should not miss the museum. It’s quite big and the guide is really good. You are also allowed to take a look into the throne room. But unfortunately it’s fortbilden to take photos.
