A man who was trapped in his room got burnt to death

On Tuesday 13th July 2022, a man who run errands for people in Gabi, a suburb of Kpando was allegedly asked by a neighbour to go and mill corn for her. He carried the bowl of corn and set off to the corn mill. The owner of the corn observed the man carefully and realized he was so drunk and may not be able to reach the corn mill safely with her bowl of corn. Sensing the danger, she called the man back and took her corn from him, and told him she will attend the corn mill herself. The man then spent some time with the woman and told her he was going to see her mother at home. According to reports, the man upon reaching home, went to sleep. His old mother was also in the room next to his. 

Few minutes later, some people around said they heard the man’s mother shouting and asking if his son was in the room but they didn’t realize that anything untoward was happening until the old lady started shouting for help. As they were running to the rescue of the old lady, they realized smoke was coming out of one of the rooms. They got there, wanted to move the old lady out of her room first since the smoke has started engulfing the old lady’s room but she insisted that, until they are able to rescue her son, she will also remain in her room. It took a lot of force to move her from her room. Those who wanted to rescue the man realized the door was locked inside. They tried to break into the room to no avail. They had to access the room through the roof and when they got in, the man was lying dead with various degrees of burns. Eye witnesses said parts of his body was even cut open by the fire. 

Though the real cause of the fire remains unknown, most people believe that, since the man smokes as well, he could have been smoking in the room and fell asleep in the process, leaving a piece of cigarette in his hand; the remaining piece of cigarette could be the cause of the fire.
