It was a heated argument in Parliament today as the house debated new set of loans that the country seeks to use in the interim till the International Monetary Fund returns with their response on the financial situation in Ghana. It can be recalled that for days now the Minority led by Haruna Iddrisu insisted that they will not approve any such loans.
Indeed, at a workshop in Ho, former President John Mahama told the Minority to vote against any new set of loans till government is able to breakdown the monies and how they will be used. The loans were in 2 tranches, $750 million and $250 million dollars.
In Parliament today, Wednesday, July 20, 2022, the Minority and Majority debated about the approval of the first tranche of $750 million. The Minority argued that government has received huge ones that no government in the 4th Republic with nothing to show for. Haruna Iddrisu thus noted that the Minority side cannot support the new loan.
The Majority however led by Osei Kyei Mensah and Afenyo Markin opposed this and in a series or arguments noted that Ghana needs this urgently and cannot put a hold on it.
Despite calls from the Minority that the house didn’t form a quorum, Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker put up the question to a voice vote and declared that those in favor of the motion had won.
