There are other underlying issues to Ogum’s resignation but clearly the coach also feels the environment is set up for him to fail. Gama and Mudasiru have left and Lamptey is banned. Etouga also on his way out. The best midfield depth eviscerated with no replacement.
In less than two years, the club has now gotten rid of three coaches; four if you’re adding Johnson Smith. Whichever way you look at this, it’s not good for stability. Winning the league for Kotoko is obviously not the biggest deal. They have done it 25 times. It’s making an impact in Africa that really matters.
Worth noting that this is not just one party’s fault. There’s also disagreement over player targets. The management doesn’t trust Prosper Nartey’s targets. And if you are privy to some of the names on the list he presented, you will understand the management’s hesitations.
Management too want to sign players with no approval from the coach. How can you give him players he has no knowledge of and who do not necessarily fit into his ideas of football?
The Ghana football eco-system is riddled with distrust between coaches and management. Club owners will never fully leave issues of player recruitment and player selections to the coaches. And there continues to be good reason why this mistrust is so deep rooted.
The biggest achievement of Kotoko last season was not winning the league; it was their ability to cover up all the big problems the club faced. Unpaid salaries, major player disciplinary issues, staff discord, allegations of theft -they survived it all with good PR to go with it.
All of this is not to take away the very good work Nana Yaw Amponsah has done and I hope this doesn’t derail what looks like a good journey so far. I hope they come out of this even stronger. Kotoko must work. This club is a behemoth that should be right up there with the Al Ahlys. Kotoko should prepare for doom in Africa and in the league.
