The Canadian men’s soccer national team to face Qatar and Uruguay this September, currently there are two Ghanaian nationals, Richie Laryea and Alphonso Davies in the squad to face these two countries (Qatar and Uruguay). But how well do you know these two outstanding players.
1. Richmond “Richie” Mamah Laryea is a Canadian professional soccer player of Ghanaian descent who plays as a right – back or midfielder for Premier League club Nottingham Forest and the Canada national team. In May 2016, Laryea was called to Canada’s U23 national team for a pair of friendlies against Guyana and Grenada. Laryea scored in the opening match against Guyana.
Laryea received his first call up to the senior team on August 26, 2019, for two CONCACAF Nations League matches against Cuba. He made his debut in the first match on September 7, 2019. On March 25, 2021, Laryea scored his first goal for Canada in a 5 – 1 win over Bermuda in the team’s first 2022 World Cup qualifying match. In June 2021, Laryea was named to Canada’s 60-man preliminary squad for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. On July 1, he was named to the final 23-man squad.
2. Alphonso Boyle Davies is a Canadian professional soccer player also of Ghanaian descent who plays as a left – back or winger for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the Canada national team. He is regarded as one of the best full – backs in the world due to his pace, dribbling and creativity.Â
Davies was the first player born in the 2000s to play in a Major League Soccer match. Davies joined Bayern in January 2019 from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps FC, He was named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season for 2019–20. In that season he also was part of the team winning the continental treble after Bayern won the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League and the DFB – Pokal. He is considered by some to be the best left – back of his generation
In June 2017, Davies became the youngest player to appear for the Canadian men’s national team. By scoring two goals in a 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup match against French Guiana, he became the youngest player to score for the Canadian men’s national team, the youngest to score at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and first player born in the 2000s to score at a top level international tournament. He would go on to be named the 2021 CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year. He is widely considered both the best player on and the face of the Canadian national team.
Davies is the first soccer player, and first Canadian, to become an ambassador for the United Nations refugee charity UNHCR.
