Country is currently tumbling economically as the country tries to negotiate with the International Monetary Fund for financial bailout. This decision came about after a long hesitation. As government battles for bailout, labor unions have also started agitating for extra allowances to cushion the economic hardship prevalent in the country.
Over the weekend, President Akufo-Addo appealed to teachers to go back to the classrooms as government deliberates on their 20% cost of living allowance. The President mentioned that he plus his ministers and appointees have had 30% cuts in their salaries as a way to burden share. Well, on GHOne’s GHToday, Tuesday, July 12, 2022, Serwaa Amihere got interactive with George Ayisi, the PRO at NADMO.
George is married to Hon. Barbara Ayisi, a former MP for Cape Coast North and former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing. Serwaa asked George if he has seen a 30% cut in his salary. George clearly felt uncomfortable in his seat. George refused to answer the questions saying it was up to him to decide to answer or not. Serwaa then boldly told him that there had been no cuts contrary to what the president said.
This still didn’t deter George Ayisi who still refused to answer. He mentioned that his salary was his personal issue and so shouldn’t be made private. Serwaa insisted that by saying yes that his salary had been slashed, it will put confidence in Ghanaians but still George refused to talk. Later Serwaa concluded that George cannot answer because there had been no cutting by 30% as the president said.
